Choosing a wedding photographer is one of those decisions that sounds straightforward until you’re actually doing it. There are a lot of photographers out there, and a lot of them have beautiful work. So how do you actually decide?
I’ve been doing this for years, and I can tell you that the couples who end up happiest with their photos usually made their decision based on the same few things. Here’s what I’d tell a friend who was starting that search.
Find someone whose work genuinely moves you
This sounds obvious, but it’s worth saying. Don’t just look for photos that are technically impressive. Look for photos that make you feel something. That makes you wish you had been there.
Browse full galleries, not just highlight images. Any photographer can pull their ten best shots. What you want to know is whether the whole story holds up. Whether the quiet moments between the big ones are just as good.
If you keep coming back to the same photographer’s work, that’s telling you something.
Pay attention to how they communicate
You’re going to spend a significant amount of your wedding day with this person. That matters more than people realize. Before you book anyone, have an actual conversation with them. See if they ask questions about you as a couple, not just about your venue and date.
A photographer who listens well is usually a photographer who sees well. Those two things tend to go together.
Look for someone who knows how to handle a real day
Timelines fall behind. Light changes. Something unexpected always happens. The photographer you want is someone who stays calm when any of that occurs and finds a way to work with it rather than against it.
Ask them about a time something went wrong on a wedding day and how they handled it. The answer will tell you a lot.
Think about the full experience, not just the photos
Your photos are the end result, but the process matters too. Do they provide a clear timeline? Do they help you plan for the best light? What happens after the wedding?

Book earlier than you think you need to
Good photographers book up fast, especially in spring and fall. If you find someone whose work you love and whose personality feels right, don’t wait. The date you want won’t be available forever.
