Engagement Session Outfit Tips: What to Wear & What to Avoid

July 15, 2025

Let’s be real—figuring out what to wear for engagement photos can feel overwhelming. You want to look amazing, feel comfortable, and still feel like yourself. The good news? You don’t need a closet full of designer pieces to nail your look. In fact, the best outfits are often the simplest—they let your connection shine while adding just the right amount of polish.

After photographing countless couples across Northern California, I’ve picked up a few solid engagement shoot wardrobe tips to help you feel confident and look effortlessly put-together on camera. Here’s what works (and what doesn’t) when planning your engagement photo outfit ideas.

Start with Comfort, Always

You’re going to be walking, sitting, hugging, maybe even dancing barefoot in the sand. If you’re fidgeting with your sleeves or feeling stiff in something tight, it’ll show in the photos. Choose outfits that feel good to move in—things that let you relax into the moment and focus on your partner, not your outfit.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of twinning outfits. Instead, aim for coordinated colors and textures that complement each other. Think earth tones, soft neutrals, or even a pop of rust or forest green—colors that blend beautifully with Northern California’s natural light and landscapes. And don’t be afraid to mix textures like denim, linen, or soft knits for some added dimension.

Pro tip: Lay your outfits out side by side (with shoes and accessories) to make sure everything flows well together.

Go for Timeless, Not Trendy

Fashion fads come and go—but your engagement photos are forever. Lean into classic silhouettes and colors that won’t feel dated in a few years. Soft patterns, muted florals, and subtle details like ruffles, buttons, or layered jewelry can elevate a look without distracting from the connection between you two.

Outfit Changes Are a Win

I always recommend bringing two outfits: one more casual, one a bit dressier. It adds variety to your gallery and gives you the chance to express different sides of your relationship. Maybe it’s jeans and boots for a walk in the redwoods, then a flowy dress and button-down for golden hour on the coast. Whatever feels true to you—we’ll build the session around it.

Footwear Matters (Even if You’re Barefoot)

Shoes might not be the star of the show, but they complete the vibe. If we’re hiking or heading to the beach, bring something easy to slip on and off—and maybe a towel to shake off sand. And if you’re going barefoot? Even better. Just make sure your wardrobe flows with that laid-back feel.

What to Avoid?

Here are a few things I generally recommend steering clear of:

  • Neon colors or anything super bright: They can reflect oddly on your skin and pull focus from your faces.
  • Small, tight patterns (like tiny stripes or busy prints): They can create weird effects on camera.
  • Logos or text: These tend to distract from the connection and feel less timeless.
  • Super baggy or overly tight clothing: Aim for flattering shapes that move with you—not against you.

Bring the Layers, Just in Case

Northern California weather can change fast. A cozy cardigan, denim jacket, or oversized sweater can be both practical and photo-friendly. Layers add texture, keep you warm, and make it easy to switch up your look without a full outfit change.

The Final Touches Matter

Don’t forget the little things—clean nails, neat hair, and any accessories that feel like “you.” Hats, rings, scarves, or even your dog’s cute bandana (yes, pups are always welcome!) can help tell your story in a personal way.

Still Unsure? I’ve Got You

When you book your engagement session with me, I send over a full style guide with even more engagement photo outfit ideas, plus one-on-one support if you want feedback on your final picks. I’ve even had couples text me outfit options while shopping—I genuinely love being part of the process.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you show up feeling like yourselves. We’ll create a space where you can relax, connect, and forget the camera’s even there.
