What brought me back to California was my older sister and her family. I wanted to be part of my nephews’ lives, and that’s how Humboldt became one of my home bases. Since then, exploring everything this area has to offer has become one of my favorite parts of being back.

Humboldt packs an unbelievable amount of variety into a small area. In a single day you can stand on a windswept beach, walk through ancient redwoods, and watch the sun drop behind coastal cliffs. That range is rare for one county. Couples who discover Humboldt as a wedding destination often can’t imagine getting married anywhere else.

The Venues

Humboldt has a strong lineup of established venues, and what sets them apart is how differently each one feels.

Redwood and Forest Venues

Take Ridgefield, for example. It sits up on Fickle Hill in Arcata, surrounded by towering redwoods, with a vintage-inspired elegance that feels completely at home in the landscape. There’s nothing quite like it in the county and probably not in the whole state.

Mitchell Grove offers something different again. It sits among the redwoods but also includes an orchard. You get towering trees and orchard rows in the same setting, something you won’t find anywhere else in Humboldt.

Historic and Restored Spaces

The Barn by Fernbridge takes a historic Ferndale barn and gives it new life, rustic and refined at the same time. Ferndale is one of the most charming towns in Northern California, and its Victorian architecture adds a unique backdrop.

Coastal and Bluff Venues

Moonstone Beach House near Trinidad sits perched above the shoreline with sweeping ocean views. I haven’t had the chance to shoot there yet, but everything I’ve seen and heard tells me it’s going to be a special one when the opportunity comes up.

Then there’s North Coast Hitching Post, which sits on Table Bluff in Loleta. On a clear day, you can see straight out to the ocean from the property. It’s a 120-foot redwood barn from 1914, with cathedral ceilings and a wooden dance floor. That combination of history and view makes it one of the most distinctive venues I’ve shot at in the region.

Private Land and Backyard Weddings

Beyond these established spots, Humboldt is also full of private properties, ranches, and backyards that couples use for weddings all the time. Some of the most memorable days I’ve shot here happened on properties that don’t even have a website. They’re simply beautiful pieces of land that someone was generous enough to share.

Why So Many Couples Choose to Elope Here

Humboldt is one of the best places in California to elope, and it’s not particularly close. The redwoods offer a natural cathedral that no venue can replicate. Ancient trees, filtered light, and absolute quiet come together in a way that’s hard to find anywhere else. If you’re considering a small, intimate ceremony, just the two of you or a handful of close people, the redwoods here will give you something that stays with you forever.

I’ve shot elopements deep in the forest, on coastal cliffs, on empty beaches, and on private ranches where the landscape was the only witness. Every single one has been different, and every single one has been incredible.

Leaning Into Unpredictable Weather

Humboldt’s coastal weather has a mind of its own, but that’s actually part of the appeal rather than something to work around. I’ve had sessions where fog rolled in mid-shoot and transformed the mood of the photos into something genuinely cinematic. The light here changes so quickly. Golden hour breaking through the redwood canopy, or catching the water at just the right moment, creates a quality of light I haven’t found anywhere else.

Being willing to lean into whatever the day gives you is part of what makes weddings here so memorable. In fact, some of the best photos I’ve taken in Humboldt happened because the weather did something unexpected, not in spite of it.
