I’ve shot weddings across a lot of this state, and I’ll say it plainly: Northern California is genuinely hard to beat as a place to get married. Not because of any one thing. It’s how much it offers, and how different each part of it feels from the next. Coastal, forested, urban, rural, intimate, grand. It’s all here, and it all photographs beautifully.

That variety is also what makes planning a wedding here a little more involved than people expect. The right choice for a moody coastal elopement looks nothing like the right choice for a 200-guest vineyard reception. Before you start booking vendors, it helps to understand what this region actually offers, and what to keep in mind as you plan.

Northern California is not one place

This is the thing most couples don’t fully appreciate until they’re deep into the planning process. Northern California covers an enormous amount of ground. The experience of getting married here changes dramatically depending on where you are.

Humboldt County gives you ancient redwoods, dramatic coastline, and an intimacy that’s hard to find anywhere else. It’s one of my home bases, and a place I know deeply, both as a photographer and as someone who’s spent a lot of time exploring it. If you’re drawn to that wild, untouched Northern California feel, it deserves its own conversation.

The Bay Area gives you iconic architecture, urban energy, and some of the most beautiful golden hour light I’ve ever shot in. San Francisco alone has enough variety to fill an entire career. Whether you’re drawn to the coast, the parks, or the city itself, there’s a Bay Area wedding for almost every couple. Here’s a closer look at what shooting there actually looks like.

Sacramento sits at the heart of the Central Valley with a growing wedding scene, beautiful historic venues, and easy access from all directions. It’s one of those cities that surprises people who haven’t spent much time there. If you’re considering Sacramento, this is worth a read.

Redding and Mount Shasta round out the northern edge of this stretch. Rivers, bridges, and wide-open valley give way to mountain venues within an hour’s drive, along with towns like Palo Cedro and Red Bluff in between. Here’s what shooting across that whole region actually looks like.

Knowing which version of Northern California fits your vision is the first real decision you need to make, and it shapes everything that follows.

Weather is part of the story

One of the most common things I hear from couples after their wedding is that the weather caught them off guard. Northern California has microclimates that can shift dramatically within a few miles. San Francisco can be fogged in, Karl making his usual appearance, while it’s 80 degrees in Napa. The Humboldt Coast can be windy and cool in July. The Sacramento Valley can hit 100 degrees in late summer.

None of that is a reason to avoid any of these places. Some of my favorite photos have come from days where the weather was doing something unexpected. A misty morning in the redwoods, a windy golden hour on the coast, these things create atmosphere that a perfectly blue-sky day cannot replicate. The key is knowing what you’re getting into and planning accordingly instead of letting the weather catch you off guard.

If you’re set on outdoor photos at a specific time of day, talk to your photographer early about what the light typically looks like at your venue and time of year. That conversation alone can save you a lot of stress on the day.

Venues book out fast

This is true across the whole state but especially true for the most sought-after venues in Northern California. If you have a specific date or venue in mind, start that search early. Twelve to eighteen months in advance is not unusual for popular venues, especially for peak season dates in spring and fall.

The good news is that Northern California has no shortage of incredible venues at every price point. From rustic barns and vineyard estates to urban rooftops, historic buildings, and private coastal properties, the options here are genuinely remarkable. If your first choice isn’t available, there’s almost always something equally special that you hadn’t considered yet.

Think about your guests’ experience

Northern California covers a lot of ground, and depending on where you’re getting married, your guests may be traveling significant distances. If most of your people are coming from the Bay Area and you’re getting married in Humboldt, that’s a five-hour drive. Not impossible, but worth factoring into your planning.

Accommodation availability varies a lot by region too. Venues in more remote areas often work with a limited number of nearby hotels or rental properties, and those can book up quickly once your guests start making plans. Sending accommodation recommendations alongside your save the date can save a lot of headaches down the line.

Your photographer should know the region

This one matters more than people realize. Northern California light, venues, and logistics all have their own rhythms, and working with a photographer who knows the area makes a real difference on the day.
