Most couples start their photographer search the same way. They scroll through Instagram, save a bunch of posts, and then realize they have no idea how to actually narrow it down or what to look for beyond pretty pictures.
Having spent years on the other side of this process, here’s what I wish more couples knew before they started reaching out.
Book earlier than you think you need to
This is the one I can’t stress enough. Popular dates in spring, summer, and fall book out fast, sometimes 12 to 18 months in advance. If you have a date in mind and you find someone whose work you love, don’t sit on it. The date you want won’t be available forever.
Look at full galleries, not just highlights
Any photographer can pull together a collection of their ten best shots. What you actually want to know is whether the whole day holds up. How do they handle tough lighting? Are the quiet in-between moments as strong as the big ones? A full gallery tells you a lot more than a highlight reel ever will.
Pay attention to how they communicate
Before you book anyone, have a real conversation with them. Notice whether they ask questions about you as a couple or just about your venue and date. A photographer who listens well tends to see well too. Those two things usually go hand in hand.
Connection matters more than you think
Your photographer is going to be with you for most of your wedding day. That’s a long time to spend with someone, and how comfortable you feel around them will show up in your photos. Don’t underestimate how much that chemistry matters.
An engagement session is worth doing
If your photographer offers one, do it. It gives you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding, and it gives your photographer a chance to understand how you move and interact together. By the time your wedding day comes, you’re not working with a stranger anymore.

Ask about what happens when things go wrong
Rain, timeline delays, unexpected moments. These things happen at almost every wedding. Ask your photographer how they handle it when the day doesn’t go according to plan. The answer will tell you a lot about how they operate under pressure.
Think about the full experience, not just the photos
Your photos are obviously the end result, but how you get there matters too. Do they help with timeline planning? What does delivery look like? It’s one of my favorite parts of the whole process.
Ask about prints and albums
Digital galleries are convenient, but printed photos last in a way that files on a hard drive don’t. Ask what options your photographer offers for albums and prints. You spent a lot of time and money on this day, and your memories deserve more than sitting in a folder nobody opens.
