When a Redo is a Perfect “Do-Over”: Emily & Dakota’s Engagement Session

Photography is not just about capturing faces; it’s about capturing personalities. Every couple brings a unique sparkle to a shoot, and it’s my job as a photographer to let that shine through. Sometimes, though, it takes a bit of trial and error to get it just right. This was precisely the case with Emily and Dakota’s engagement session.

Our initial shoot was set against the stunning backdrops of Waluplh-Lighthouse Ranch in Loleta. The location was picturesque, and Emily and Dakota looked absolutely elegant. We aimed for a blend of composed and spontaneous moments, which produced some truly beautiful photographs. However, when I sent them the final photos, the response lacked the excitement I anticipated. Something was missing.

Prompted by this, I reached out to Emily to gather her thoughts. During our conversation, Emily confessed she felt self-conscious about the session. The more formal, dressed-up approach didn’t resonate with their everyday selves. They are a couple who thrives in a relaxed, goofy atmosphere—yes, sometimes that means jeans over dresses! The formality of their attire and the romantic setting had made Emily feel out of her element, which influenced her initial reaction to the photos.

Understanding this, I suggested a reshoot, this time in a setting that was personal and meaningful to them. We moved the location to her dad’s backyard in Hydesville, involving her beloved horses and pony. To make the reshoot comfortable for them, we agreed on a reduced fee.

The second session was transformative. The casual setting and our laid-back approach allowed them to let their guard down and truly be themselves. This time, the photos captured the genuine fun they have together, complete with playful interactions with their horses and lots of laughter. The reshoot allowed us to capture the real, unfiltered joy of their relationship in a way that the first session hadn’t.

This experience was a powerful reminder of the essence of engagement photography. It’s not just about creating a beautiful image; it’s about creating a snapshot of the couple’s true selves. Engagement shoots are not everyday occurrences, but they should always reflect what feels right for the couple. It’s about making memories that they will look back on and see not just their faces, but their hearts and their bonds.

Emily and Dakota’s story underscores why I always aim to tune into the unique frequencies each couple radiates. Every couple has their own rhythm, their laughs, their looks, their little quirks that make them unique. Capturing these details is what turns a simple photo into a story—a story of love, laughter, and the beautifully unique tapestry of life they share.

So, whether you’re planning your own engagement session or any momentous photo shoot, remember: be yourself, in all your wonderful, quirky glory. After all, those are the memories you’ll cherish the most.
